About Whittier Cafe

Whittier Cafe is Denver’s only African espresso bar, located in the historic Whittier neighborhood. The café specializes in African coffees sourced from nations such as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

They also host a traditional East African coffee ceremony every Sunday at 2 p.m., offering guests a unique cultural experience that includes roasting beans in a clay pot called a “jebena” and enjoying the coffee in a communal setting.

Beyond its culinary offerings, Whittier Cafe is deeply committed to social justice. The owner, Millete Birhanemaskel, has fostered an environment that supports community engagement and activism.

The café has served as a gathering place for various social causes, including hosting events like a winter coat drive to support the unhoused community.
